Picture of the Week

This is my best friend, Cynthia, the one I try not to stand beside in pictures....I mean look at her, can you blame me? By the way, she's as beautiful on the inside as on the outside. This is her sweet, charming and quite handsome brood of men she lives with....her very manly husband and their two precious boys. FYI....her son isn't old enough to actually play on the Longhorns, as in UT, but his football team was named the Longhorns....this made the Payne family (diehard Longhorn fans) extremely happy....I'm not kidding when I say, some of our babes' first words were Hook 'Em!

Question of the Day...

I went for my first visit to the physical therapist, for the tendonitis in my foot, and now my neck hurts....what's up with that?

INCONSIDERATION or RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

I have come across several inconsiderate folks lately, none of whom I know personally, but nonetheless I have witnessed some blatant inconsideration. I think it must be the holiday season....go figure....we're suppose to be celebrating the birth of our risen Lord and Savior, but I think the busyness and stress can get the best of folks sometimes. I think the holidays either bring out the best in people or the worst. I've experienced both. On the other side of that coin, our family has experienced the blessing of Random Acts of Kindness as well. We usually experience these this time of year, and here is the story of how we receive this blessing each year.
We have a big Boisd'arc tree in our yard, and it's a really cool and really old tree, that people often comment about. This tree produces these things....that we call horse apples (see pic below), but it only produces them for a few months of the year. They are not apples, that are edible, and we find them to be somewhat annoying; since they have to be picked up when you want to cut the grass and tons of them fall from the tree. We really knew no purpose they served UNTIL we started having strangers knock at our door to ask if they could take some home. These trees and their offspring must not be found in northern climates, because we have people from other states (who are visiting for the holidays) who have never seen them. They are completely mesmerized by these things. NPayne and I use to be fascinated and are still amused by this, because we think these horse apples are a burden. We have asked a few people what they will do with them, and we have learned that these are good for keeping bugs and rodents out of your house; so they just lay them around the perimeter of their homes. We have also been told that some folks paint them white and use them as decorative snowballs in their Christmas decorations. Then we have one lady, in particular, who comes to get them every year to add some green to her dying flowerbeds. She is the lady who also provides the Random Acts of Kindness.
She is an elderly German lady, I'll call her Mrs. G, and she is a widow. She started coming several years ago to ask if she could take the horse apples. Of course we gladly obliged, becauses we are glad to get rid of them. After the first time she came to ask about taking some....she returned a few days later. I assumed it was to get some more horse apples, but instead she brought my children these wonderful advent calendars (see pic above). When she first started coming, we had only 4 children; so she would bring 4 calendars. Then she came one Thanksgiving to get the horse apples and met our new baby Elliot. When she returned with the advent calendars, again she had 4, and she brought baby Elliot some nice warm feety pajamas. This year, she must have decided that Elliot was old enough to enjoy the chocolate from the advent calendar, because she brought her one too. She has met all of our children, and they love it when she comes (and so do I). Every year she comes around Thanksgiving to get the horse apples, and then she comes back before Dec. 1st to deliver the advent calendars. We have come to treasure this sweet German friend, not because she brings us candy; but because she is a kind and generous soul. I so treasure the fact that my children get to receive a Random Act of Kindness each year, and that they witness how it feels to be given something for the pure fact that someone is just being kind. I know, from talking to Mrs. G, that she doesn't have a lot of money; and I also know that she also receives a gift when she comes to our home....it's not the gift of the horse apples but the gift of joy. She receives joy at seeing the excitement of our children, not only because she is bringing them something, but also because they look forward to seeing her each year. Mrs. G has already visited us this year, so we won't see her again until next Thanksgiving. Although she has never told me in words, I have no doubt that she is celebrating the birth of our risen Lord and Savior this holiday season.

TIDBIT OF INFORMATION-Breakfast

This morning was the student breakfast for all middle schoolers who have straight A's (excuse me while I beem with pride a minute.....okay done), I accompanied Addi Jo to the breakfast in her school's library; and guess what they serve to a bunch of tweens and teens? PIZZA....how appropriate I thought! Her principal, who is a very funny guy, called it breakfast pizza pie; which could technically be true....it WAS sausage!

Christmas Parade...Wish me warmth!

CHRISTMAS PARADE DECEMBER 2007, and the float that Addi Jo was riding on! Excuse the darkness of this photo, but well uh....it was night time; therefore it was dark. No seriously I could have lightened it up a bit with photoshop, but I chose to leave it dark. It sort of adds to the ambiance....really I just didn't take the time to lighten it up. Tomorrow night is our annual Christmas parade in our hometown. NPayne and I have been attending this parade, since we moved here 12 years ago. The last few years, we have had a few of our buttercups ride on a float in the parade. This year 5 of the 7 of us will be IN the parade in some sort of fashion....driving a suburban pulling a float (that would be NPayne), walking (that would be Addi Jo with the middle school band), riding on the float (that would be Drew with her Adventure Guide troop), riding in the burban which is pulling the float (that would be Cal and Bryna). Cal is HORRIFIED of parades, I mean absolutely TERRIFIED....way too noisy and crowded for his comfort level, frankly way too noisy and crowded for my comfort level as well; BUT what do ya do? Got family in the parade....must attend. That leaves the babe and I to fly solo for the parade. She and I are walking downtown (we live 2 blocks from all the hoopla) with some friends and moms (whose children will be riding on the float that NPayne is pulling). The parade is actually really cool, and all the young uns LOVE it (except Cal). He is actually okay with riding in the suburban, but he has to be completely prepared for this event and reassured about a million times that he will be with NPayne. Last year he did really well, once he figured out that he was not sitting at the parade but was riding in the car. It took him a while to grasp that concept and get control of himself....then when they got home, he threw up EVERYWHERE; because he had gotten carsick from being in the suburban so long. You see anyone, participating in the parade, has to be in line downtown one hour before it starts; so there is A LOT of hanging around and WAITING....WAITING! NPayne said that part is NOT ENJOYABLE in the least....WAITING with a bunch of stir crazy little girls.... especially when it's cold (he is EXTREMELY anti-cold weather). Plus the parade is really long....a ton of participants, so it lasts about 2 hours. And to put a little spin on everything, there is suppose to be a coldfront come in tomorrow....wouldn't ya know it....it couldn't hold off one more day? So that will definitely change my mood about this whole parade business. Nice cool, yet comfortable, night at the parade....fabulous. Freezing cold at the parade....NOT SO MUCH! Did I mention that the parade is looooong? I feel like I'm whining and complaining a lot here....which is probably because I am. Let's change direction and head in a little more positive route....something really great about the parade and probably my favorite part (besides the getting to see my babes IN the parade, going with my friends, and seeing my little girl's excited reaction to all of the floats) is the fact that after each float passes all the way down Main St. including the grand finale float which totes Santa and Mrs. Claus (yes the main street downtown is actually called Main St.-how typical), it loops around and drives right by our house still all lit up and everything. This is so great, because it's like our own private little parade....sort of after the fact, Mr. and Mrs. Claus and all. Actually Cal thinks it's his own little parade, and this he LOVES; because there's no loud announcer or horns or music or bands and there's no crowd which is actually quite appealing to his mother as well. He stands at the edge of our yard and becomes the announcer for "our own private parade." He will say things like....Look mom, it's the parade (about a hundred thousand times) until the last float comes by; and then he will say "Look mom, it's Santa." I just LOVE it, and I get goose bumps thinking about how much he enjoys "our own private parade."
Tomorrow night after it's all said and done, I'll post a picture from this years parade, well....uh, because I have to take some first!

Who Knew....Pigtails would make me so happy...

FRONT VIEW! The even better and cuter.... BACK VIEW!

WORDFUL WEDNESDAY....even though it's still Tuesday!

I was looking through beach pictures, because I absolutely LOVE beach pictures and have decided to frame a ton of them to display in our house; and I came across this picture. I squealed with joy when I found it, well not really, but almost. This is Elliot at the beach in 2007. She was about 11 months old, and she LOVED the beach. As you can tell, she loved the sand as well....digging, feeling, EATING! She is so stinkin' cute I can hardly stand it. What a buttercup! I Teared Up Today...Not Once, Not Twice, But Six Times!

I am about to reveal how "old" I really am....today while I was tutoring middle schoolers for Reading, we watched the making of the We Are The World record....yes I said record, not CD. Although I'm sure I had seen it when it was made, in 1985, it was amazing to watch it again...some 23 years later. Each time (6 to be exact), I showed the video....yes I said video, not DVD....I teared up at the thought of what that record was all about....45 famous musicians (and Dan Akroyd, still not sure what that was all about) recording a record to raise money for starving people in Africa. WOW!!!!
Before we watched the video, we read about the making of the record in a textbook. As we looked at the pictures and read about the musicians who participated, the students recognized NOT A ONE of the musicians, except Michael Jackson. Surely, I thought to myself, they will recognize some of them when the video begins and they actually see and hear them sing; BUT.....NOT A ONE...They did NOT recognize Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Huey Lewis, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, or any of the others. I couldn't believe they didn't recognize any of these musicians (even though these kids weren't born until 8-10 years after this video was made), my family listens to a lot of "old" music; so I guess I just assumed there would be at least one of these students that did as well....BUT not so much. The thing that really cracked me up was that there was one particular group of 6th graders, who were mainly Spanish speaking students, some of them are just learning English; and these students kept asking me "Where is Elvis?" I said, "Well Elvis had already died when they made this." Finally one boy in particular, Ronaldo, kept saying over and over "Elvis, Elvis." Then as I was trying to explain that Elvis had already died, he pointed to the TV and said loudly "Elvis." When I looked at the TV, I almost laughed out loud; because I realized that the students thought that John Oates (from Hall and Oates) was Elvis....afro, moustache and all (I mean I could understand them mistaking him for Geraldo Rivera, BUT ELVIS....Help Me Henry....ABSOLUTELY NO RESEMBLANCE!)! Tutoring today brought me much enjoyment, laughter and some silent tears. As for the students, it just brought them enjoyment and some giggles at the hairstyles and wardrobes via 1985.

Our Weekend Getaway...Someday Our Reality!

NPayne and I have plans to own a lakehouse someday....that's one of our future dreams. But for now we hang out with our friends who live our dream every single day!
NPayne catching a fish...NOT, but he was giving it a try. Yes that would be me with my arm around him!
NPayne, Drew and Elli while on our walk.
Cal on the dock. Looking awfully cute!
Elliot cooling off her marshmallow...it hasn't actually been in the fire but don't tell her that!
Bryna getting ready to roast!
Drew....with her finger lickin' good marshmallows! She is a cute stinkin' cowgirl!
Addi and their new pup...Luna! This makes 4 dogs for them, one cat...the fattest cat in the world, one cow, and a whole bunch of other critters (that they don't claim as pets).

The guest house that Jeff is building...can't wait to be the guests! Isn't it AWESOME?
Our dear friends... Leslie, Jeff and their little B girl live on a private lake. It is really out in the middle of nowhere, and IT'S GREAT! It's about 1 1/2 hours from us, but we go there as often as we possibly can; because we LOVE it & we LOVE them. Their house is quaint, comfortable and homey. They also own a small but adorable log cabin which is directly across the lake from their house which is where we usually spend the night when we go for an overnight outing. The cabin, although small, has a fold out couch in the living room. It has a big beautiful and comfy double bed in the downstairs bedroom, and it has two cots and a really cool double bed (which hangs from the ceiling...yes literally swings from the ceiling) in the upstairs loft. In other words, although the cabin is very small; it accomodates us nicely. Jeff, is about one of the handiest guys I know, and he built the two beds that are in the cabin (including the swinging bed). Yes I know....swinging bed....may cause some inappropriate images to cross your mind, however; the bed was built to hang from the ceiling for a purpose....NO not that purpose. It was built that way, so they would have room to store things in the loft; because it was so small. Leslie and Jeff lived in that cabin for several years before they became parents. When they discovered a babe was in their future, they bought the place across the lake. Their house, across the lake, is small but much more accomodating for children. When we go to visit... we fish a lot, play outside a lot, take walks a lot, and eat a lot (they are both really good cooks). Leslie is from a French background, so everything she cooks is fabulously rich with cream, butter, cream cheese, etc. This time of year, it's chilly; so this weekend we built a campfire and sat around it while the kids roasted marshmallows and ran around. Cal LOVES this tractor (see Spookarama post for more details) that they use to have at the cabin, so Jeff oftentimes tries to bring it over for him to sit on and play on; and it makes us all gleefully happy to see Cal have so much fun. As I said earlier, Jeff is one of the handiest guys I know. He completely re-did the house they live in right now, and it is the cutest house with tons of character. Of course it helps that Leslie is extremely creative as well. Right now they are in the process of designing and builiding a guest house on their land, and it is the coolest thing ever. I can't wait for it to be complete, because I know it will be decorated fabulously and have all kinds of cool stuff in it (I posted a picture of the guest house...that Jeff is building). Someday NPayne and I want to have a place, like theirs, to escape to....we would actually like it to be on their private lake; so we could go over to their house for that delicious and ever so healthy (wink) breakfast that Leslie makes for us when we visit.

SIT BACK FOR ANOTHER NOT ME MONDAY....

This week I did Not completely skip the turkey and dressing leftovers and immediately go for the leftover homemade chocolate and coconut cream pie for breakfast, not one, but two mornings in a row....NOT ME! That would be a bad example to my children....eating pie for breakfast. And I did not hurriedly eat it while they were upstairs, so they wouldn't see me...I would NEVER do something like that.
I did not let Elli skip her nap on Saturday for the sole purpose and enjoyment of sitting by a campfire and roasting marshmallows while visiting our friends' (Leslie, Jeff and B)at their private lake. I would never let a sweet little girl skip her nap for some pure fun....I'm way to scheduled for that kind of irresponsible parenting. While at the lake on Saturday, I DID NOT take more photos of their new puppy (Luna) than I did of the children...NOT I!
I DID NOT let Drew make mudballs, with our sweet friend's darling little girl, B while we were visiting them at the lake! I would NEVER DO that. I DO NOT let my children get dirty. I also DID NOT think they were playing with poop when I originally saw their hands and their mudballs, only to realize that my 7 year old would know better...wouldn't she?
While at the lake, I DID NOT get giddy with excitement and feel completely overwhelmed with gratitude when Jeff brought the tractor over, for my sweet boy Cal to play on, just because Jeff knows how much Cal LOVES that tractor! I did not get a little lump in my throat at such a kind gesture, and I WAS NOT completely gleeful!
This week I did not make the executive decision to keep our Christmas decorating to a minimum this year, because honestly I am not already EXHAUSTED with the thought of putting it all away after Christmas....NOT ME!
This week I did not visit the podiatrist again (ewwww) only to discover that I indeed do NOT have to have PT, and I am NOT one bit nervous about it....NOT ONE BIT!
My girls and I did NOT go shopping on Black Friday....and not buy several things for them...and NO we did NOT do that right before Christmas!
Lastly....I did not thoroughly enjoy the week off, from school and work, last week; and I DO NOT wish it was summer so the children could stay home with me all day. And I did not try to justify why they could all skip school for a few more days.
