Wordful Wednesday....The Men In My Life!

Of my 5 children, I would say NPayne holds the key to Callahan's and Elliot's hearts....Daddy's boy and Daddy's Girl....most definitely! The other thing that NPayne holds for Callahan is pride....now I know being prideful can be a sin, in fact it's one of the 7 deadly sins; BUT it's definitely not sinful in the way that I'm referring to NPayne's feelings for his son. I don't know if it's true or not that all men desire to have a son....I think that can be true for some, but mainly I think if the man has a son; then YES he always wanted a son. If a man has only daughters, then YES he always wanted daughters....you know?!. Truly are there really folks that are disappointed by the blessing of a child that God has given them just because of their gender? I suppose there might be, but not for NPayne. Now of course if you read my blog, you know we have 4 girls and a boy; so NPayne and I were blessed with both....girls and boy. Also if you read my blog, you know that Callahan is not a typical boy. He has Autism and Fragile X....he is a special needs child. When I say that NPayne holds a lot of pride for his son, what I mean by that is that he is not embarassed, afraid, or intimidated by Cal's special need. He is perfectly okay in letting Callahan do things that most 9 year old boys wouldn't do....or at least admit to doing....play with his sisters' dollhouse, ride his bike with training wheels, sing preschool songs LOUDLY! He takes pride in Cal and all of his accomplishments, no matter how big or how small, when Cal makes unusual noises and flaps his hands wildly; NPayne goes right along with him. One of the things that Cal does regulary is called echolalia....he will repeat something he has heard on TV or the radio over and over and over....usually a commercial. He gets "stuck" on a certain phrase which makes absolutely no sense out of context when said to someone....especially someone who doesn't know him. For example, he will say something like "Get Ready, Get Set for Hip Hop Harry coming up next right after more Paz!" He will say it all the time (literally dozens of times per day) and to whomever happens to be around. Then he will ask you to say it with him or repeat after him or say it slow or say it fast, and he will laugh wildly and uncontrollably if you oblige him. When Cal says, "Daddy, say....!" NPayne says it, no matter who is listening or where they are. NPayne doesn't get angry at people when they stare which believe me they do....in fact most of the time I don't think he even notices. He embraces Cal and all of his quirkiness. He doesn't let Cal's disability affect how he acts towards him....he is not ashamed or embarassed, but he is proud....very proud....Cal is, in fact, the son he always wanted!

I think pride in one's son is a healthy sort of pride. :)
